Can I include a private plate in my Will?

Yes, you can – and should – include your private plate in your Will. A personalised registration is considered part of your personal estate, whether it’s assigned to a vehicle or held on retention. If you don’t make provisions for it, your private plate could be overlooked or create complications for your executors.

Private number plates are far more common than many people realise. According to The Sun, between 2019 and 2024, the DVLA sold over 2.6 million private number plates, highlighting just how popular these personalised registrations have become.

They can carry sentimental value or be worth thousands – and without clear instructions, it’s not always obvious who should inherit them.

Including a private plate in your Will ensures your wishes are clear and legally binding. You might choose to gift it to a particular individual – for example, a family member who shares your initials – or have it sold and the proceeds divided among your beneficiaries.

Without instructions, your executors must decide how to handle it, which may not reflect what you intended.

It’s important to understand that a registration plate is not automatically transferred with a vehicle. Whether the plate is assigned to a car or held on a certificate, the legal right to it must be formally passed on. This can be done through a specific gift in your Will or as part of your residual estate.
